Middlesex County is the largest county in the state of Massachusetts in population (1,465,396 in 2000), and had the most population growth in MA during the 1990's. Part of the metropolitan area known as "Boston-Worcester-Lawrence-Lowell-Brockton, MA-NH", Middlesex is also frequently combined with "Boston-Worcester-Manchester MA-NH" for statistical purposes. The population density of 1,790.1 per square mile ( 823.5 sq. miles area) has fostered a cultural and historical mecca in this county.
